China’s Haiyang-2E Satellite Boosts Ocean Data for Economic Advantages

China has advanced its ocean observation and environmental monitoring capacities with the successful launch of the Haiyang-2E (HY-2E) marine satellite. The satellite was deployed into orbit via a Long March 4B rocket, which ascended from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China at 7:46 a.m. Beijing time on Thursday. This mission represents the 654th launch in the history of the Long March rocket series.

Developed by the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST), the HY-2E satellite is part of China’s Haiyang-2 series, which is the nation’s first satellite network focused on monitoring the marine dynamic environment. This latest satellite will take over from the HY-2B satellite, which was launched in 2018, while continuing to work in conjunction with the current HY-2C and HY-2D satellites. Together, this constellation of satellites will deliver continuous data crucial for marine observation and forecasting services.

Equipped with four sophisticated microwave remote sensing instruments, the HY-2E satellite is designed to gather comprehensive data on sea surface conditions. These tools will measure various metrics such as sea surface height, wave height, wind fields, and sea surface temperature. The data collected will be valuable for marine weather forecasting, climate research, and studies of phenomena like El Niño. Scientists anticipate that the satellite will significantly enhance the accuracy and reliability of ocean-related data collection and analysis.

Over the past decade, the Haiyang-2 satellite program has been instrumental in areas such as disaster prevention, maritime safety, and scientific research. The program’s satellites have provided essential data for tracking typhoons, supporting tsunami early warning systems, and refining global numerical weather prediction models. Additionally, their observations have been vital for marine resource management and national maritime security efforts.

Beyond its contributions to weather and climate science, the Haiyang-2 satellite series offers practical benefits for industries such as fishing and shipping. The data on ocean currents, wind, and waves assist in pinpointing productive fishing areas, thus enabling more efficient vessel operations and cost reduction. Since the launch of HY-2B, the satellites have also included an Automatic Identification System (AIS), which allows for the continuous tracking of vessel positions, speeds, and identification details, thereby enhancing navigation safety on busy maritime routes.
