This initiative, agreed upon during the China-UK Joint Economic and Trade Commission meeting in London, aims to deepen cooperation in high-value service industries amidst ongoing global trade uncertainties.
Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao expressed optimism about increasing British investments in China and emphasized the importance of a fair and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese companies in the UK. The discussions underscored both nations’ dedication to maintaining a rules-based global trading system, in alignment with principles advocated by the World Trade Organization.
Peter Kyle, the UK Business and Trade Secretary, underscored the significance of the services sector as a cornerstone of UK-China relations. He pointed out that China’s rapidly expanding services sector presents substantial opportunities for British enterprises. Kyle affirmed the UK’s commitment to enhancing collaboration through the bilateral services partnership and the ongoing study on the trade agreement.
Amid these developments, China voiced its concerns regarding the UK’s new steel import restrictions, urging the UK to revise these measures to ensure compliance with international trade regulations. This issue highlights the complexities of the trade dynamics between the two countries.
Experts suggest that the proposed services trade agreement holds the potential to unlock new avenues in sectors such as finance, banking, education, professional services, skills training, and creative industries. Concurrently, merchandise trade between China and the UK has shown resilience, with a 6.5% increase in bilateral goods trade recorded in the first five months of 2026 compared to the previous year.
