Motegi reported a short, informal conversation with China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi, which he described as focusing on bilateral relations. He emphasized the need for ongoing dialogue to promote regional peace. However, this interaction was met with skepticism from China, which denied that any meeting or planned contact had occurred, highlighting the sensitive nature of their diplomatic relationship.
Additionally, Motegi’s brief meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov marked a significant point of contact between Japan and Russia since the latter’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The discussion, while brief, touched upon bilateral relations and regional issues, representing the first known engagement between the two nations’ top diplomats post-invasion.
Despite these renewed diplomatic conversations, Japan maintained its firm stance on supporting Ukraine and upholding sanctions against Russia. Analysts pointed out the importance of continuing dialogue to manage bilateral issues effectively. However, they also cautioned that any diplomatic engagement should not compromise Japan’s international commitments, particularly in the context of its support for Ukraine.
